Even if you use another tool, you have Redmine to thank

Our marketing teams felt overwhelmed by the complexity if Jira. We just couldn't make it work. Redmine, however, with a set of agile plugins, allowed us to have a true kanban board and implement really robust scrum workflows using Redmine. It was a tremendous experience and really helps us tackle our weekly tasks.

Pros

Being an open source project, Redmine has driven out the excess costs from project management and issue tracking software. Almost every other enterprise software project has to keep in mind that their customers can always choose a free and highly customizable read mine installation as an alternative, so Redmine makes the entire ecosystem more robust. What I really like the most is the low overhead for the server so that you can run a very large installation for hundreds or thousands of users on a low cost EC2 instance with extremely good performance. Checkout AWS LightSail if you want AWS specifically. If you're on a tight budget and want something implemented quickly, Redmine is the way to go. There are even hosted solutions out there like Plan.io that take away all the technical requirements for you.

Cons

Out of the box, you will need to get a better skin and probably customize a lot of the UI to make it look more visually appealing. The overall design a Redmine feels a little dated now, so you will need to download other themes or probably purchase a paid one to make it feel more modern and usable.

We manage all our web development projects through Redmine, over 2000 now in total. I've tried several other PM tools but none had as much power or as good of a price as this!

Pros

So I run a small web development team, working with medium to large projects for all sorts of clients. We've been using Redmine for over a decade now and have tried several other project management tools that look nicer, load faster, and are easier to set up. However, Redmine is a solid product that allows you to fully describe project tasks, assign to team members, and keep up with project progress. Once you have it set up, it's easy to use and free except for the hosting. We go with the self hosting option but there is a Redmine hosting service I've seen. Definitely recommend.

Cons

Redmine is clunky, lacks good design, and out of the box, each action requires a new page load. If you do the self-hosted option, you have to install and configure this Ruby on Rails application which is a serious pain in the butt. We hired a guy to set it up for us (3 hours) and the hosting (over 2000 projects now) is costing $22/mo. So even though it's clunky, it does the job well. We are planning on installing some add-ons soon to make it load via Ajax and look nicer.

Redmine for IT issue/bug tracking across Epics

Moderately positive. If you don't have the money for Basecamp or Jira, it's a cheaper alternative. The cost you pay is for the bugs you see while running it.

Pros

It was easy to use the software; most of it was intuitive and it had an impressive link-back and drill-down system. I liked that we could customize dashboards and pull some basic metrics out of the funnels. Since we were a smaller team that used it, we didn't have large amounts of issues/data problems, so it was nice to have everything loading in context and faster.

Cons

Open source setup, so lots of bugs. Some things like email notifications never worked properly. Was hard to integrate other things with it (though this may have gotten better). Sometimes we would lose access to tickets and issues, and sometimes they disappeared out of the system, or we'd see duplications.

Best Project Tracker/Management/Team Tool bar none

Excellent project/tracker management - faster execution of projects

Excellent project/tracker management - faster execution of projects

Pros

You can get the bare bones redmine up and running in minutes using a bitnami stack. Out of the box it's built for speed and simplicity, but if you are prepared to put some minimal effort in to add plugins, you can add many features, all free, that take it to the next level.

Cons

The barebones version leads many (reviewers on this site included) to think that's all there is. It's built to be modular and extensible, so if you don't like the UI, you can simply add themes, if you want it to do additional stuff like tight email integration, agile (yes there are multiple free versions), helpdesk, Work Breakdown Structures, Charts, fully customized menu bar, repositories, Vault, Excellent Wiki, integrations to Slack and other ticket systems etc - you can do all of that. But because people see versions of Jira or Service Now running with more features (both of which require much more knowledge and effort), they think that redmine is underpowered. So imho that would be my main issue - it's reputation regarding functionality and security - both unfounded.

My own experience with Redmine has been very smooth and I could certainly understand all the benefits it brought to the team and to the managers involved in the project.

Pros

Redmine has a great number of features that are extremely useful for any team working on a project. You can store important files in its Wiki, allowing information both from the project and the company itself to be stored in a unique and well-organized place. Tasks are easily created and assigned to one more person and tracking the task's progression is extremely easy. Besides that, the Gantt chart and a couple of other tools allow for easy visualization of the project's progress and how each person working on it is doing.

Cons

Redmine's User Interface is, honestly, not that pleasing to look at. It really feels like software coming from the 90s that is old and clunky. That assessment is incorrect and Redmine actually works really well, but it's still not beautiful at all.

Pros

I have used the Redmine tool for a long time and I can guarantee it is the best tool for task management, time tracking and projects. I already tried to use others, which are said to be more effective but I ended up coming back to Redmine because it suited me perfectly.

Cons

I can not find defects in the usability and in the interaction of the purposes of Redmine because it is a very good tool, but only lacking integrations with current tools. As for example, Bitbucket and other tools that are more current and that together I believe would make the tool even better. I think the installation of plugins that is archaic (uploading via FTP and restarting server) is bad too, I would like it to be a simpler way, user frendly.

I was working with Redmine for about a year and a half and I have to admit - it wasn't as good as I would have liked. One of its biggest advantages is the low price of the app (compared to market alternatives). Customer service was good and helpful - each time I had a problem, someone resolved it quite quickly. Also, Redmine has a huge number of features and plugins that can be added and used with it but...
A lot of these plugins are outdated or abandoned. I had a couple of problems with them (usually didn't want to work as expected). Because of that, integration with external apps may be problematic, especially if a user chooses some less-known software. To tell the truth, the number of plug-ins does not come close to the number of plug-ins created for apps of its biggest market competitors. The community gathered around Redmine is not so big compared to other existing management solutions. And the last thing and in my opinion the biggest disadvantage of Redmine - the design. The app feels outdated and clumsy. A lot of elements are not visible or they are blending with nearby elements. It is easy to mistake one project for another, especially if they are named similarly.
To sum up, it is a good solution if you have a rather small company with a small number of projects and don't want to pay much for a Project Management tool. If not, I would choose any of the competitors.

Pros

A number of features.
Low price.
Customer service.

Cons

Design, design, and one more time design.
Average mechanics of the app.
Integration with other IT apps.
Relatively small community

Works better than it looks

Reviewed on 2018/11/15

Pros

Redmine has clear, logical functionality and there's a lot of power in using Markdown to create connections between documentation and tasks. The wiki feature was very useful for my team! I also liked being able to set milestones and easily configure ticket options (priorities, assignments, status). In this sense, it's similar to JIRA in that you can very easily edit information about tasks and produce robust, well-structured documentation.

Cons

The UI doesn't feel super polished, and the wiki feature would have been difficult for my team to adopt because you need to know Markdown in order to use it effectively. (Yes, Markdown is both a Pro and a Con in this review.)
Redmine also didn't have a chat feature or the kind of file preview options my team expected.

Free Project Management

Redmine provides a simple and easy to use tracking and project management software system all built into one. Redmine's issue tracking or ticketing system gives developers a fast and flexible tool to address issues with the software. The tool can also be used to track projects and to "chunk" projects into smaller bite-sized sub-projects that increase productivity and help members of a team keep up to date with the progress of a project.

I've used Redmine with teams and found that the collaborative nature of the product can help members stay in touch and help with assigning subtasks. As a scrum manager, I found that it helps greatly in sprint planning and reporting. Also, you can generate Gant charts to visually show where a project is at any time.

The best part of Redmine is that it's open sourced and given some customization, you can quickly create a ticketing and/or program management that helps meet the needs of different members of a team. Redmine is also free to use, which makes it popular with small and large organizations that don't have vast budgets for software purchases.

Pros

1. Open-source (free)
2. Easy to use (once it's been customized)
3. Flexible (can be customized to your needs)
4. Multi-purposed (serve different roles at the same time)

Cons

1. Requires someone to administrate it.
2. Requires installation, but a cloud based version is available.

This is a very good tool for any small or mid sized companies and then need a free bug tracking tool then absolutely I recommend to use Redmine.

Pros

Any small or mid sized companies need a free bug tracking tool then absolutely I would recommend to use Redmine.
Because it is quite easy to use and have all basic features you need for tracking defects. you can create a bug tracking tickets without struggle a much.
It is having the simple interface and quick layout for project and even task entry and also good filtering system for sorting through tasks.

Cons

This tool mainly miss the some useful features like you cannot edit created defects or tasks, only write comments to them.
So definitely at the time of creation you have to take care of the bug. UI Layout is looks like outdated and we cannot feel like working on a new or advanced software.
