Tracking bus riders just got easy
I like the simplicity of being able to find a student on a school bus. If a parent calls the school to find their child, I can see if the child is on the bus without trying to contact the transportation department. This has come in handy when a parent believes their student didn't ride the bus and I can tell the parent that actually their child scanned on and off the bus. I can even give times and the exact stop.
Synovia has much greater use than just tracking students on buses, but this is my main use for it.
All of this magic only works if the student scans on and off the bus with their bus pass. Our district does not use the chip system so students have to scan a bar code. The problems with this are: 1. The scanner doesn't always work, 2. the students lose their bus pass, and 3. Some drivers don't enforce the use of the pass. All of these issues undermine the successful implementation of Synovia.
The things that worked were mediocre, lots of problems though
The software itself was decent. Reporting features were good, able to get comprehensive data from the full fleet.
Approximately 35% of our fleet of 120 vehicles didn't work. The units would check in every day between 5-8am, and would accurately show where the vehicle was parked (meaning they were communicating) but there was no status all day. Was told by lousy customer service team that we need to check daily for "Ignition on" alerts, but That implies that there is a high potential for issues if you are supposed to daily check that they work. Once we got one unit working, another stopped. Never ending cycle. Went through multiple tech support reps, multiple sales reps, area managers and even a few VPs and the president of the company with no satisfaction ever. Happyest day for our company was when the contract expired.
