A very good option to reinforce your language skills

Reviewed on 2021/04/15

As a brazilian trilingual person (I spoke portuguese, english and spanish), it is a way for keep my language skills sharp, and also to learn about other languages. Nowdays I am learning japanese, and it has been a very good experience, I had contact with the language on the past, but even for a person which had not have it, the way which the App explain everything, is pretty easy and well guided. My mother is learning spanish using it, and it is awesome how she can talk with me and explain some complexes things using the skills which she learned through Duolingo.

Pros

The ease of use, the contents inside it, the exercises, the grammatic explanations are pretty good, also they have some "died languages", as latin, Irish, and some other dialects, which without this kind of technology would be tend to disappear.

Cons

Sometimes the exercises repeat so much, at point to make the user bored, but I know that some people learns with repetition. Therefore, I do not see so much advantage to choose the paid version of it.

Duolingo is changing how people learn language

Reviewed on 2022/12/19

I have nothing but good things to say about Duolingo. It's the first app I open every day, and one of the last apps I use every night. The way they have gamified learning and paired it with AI to customize learning paths, for language learners of all skill levels, is utterly remarkable. I spent 12+ years learning French in school and Duolingo was able to break grammar and conjugation issues that had plagued me for more than 20 years. Merci Duo!

Pros

The way that Duolingo has built a community of language lovers through a gamified learning system is truly worth noting. The customized learning paths created for each user offers language learners of all skill levels to start confidently. Having tried all of the major language learning platforms before landing on Duo, I really can't think of a better place to get your family learning language.

Cons

The only con that I could list is that the profiles could be expanded to allow people to include their social media handles. It would be great to connect with other Duo users on, and off, the platform!

Great Language Learning Software, But Riddled with Ads

Reviewed on 2021/08/09

I have had a pretty good experience with Duolingo. It is a very effective software for language learning. It is easy to track your learning and the learning style is effective for teaching language content. I was able to apply my learning a lot faster using Duolingo as compared to other language learning software. Duolingo is available via a mobile app so you can take your courses with you anywhere. Courses are also very short so it's very easy to get a few done in a relatively short time, so perfect for learning over lunch breaks or other micro-learning sessions.

Pros

Duolingo is very easy to use and very effective. It uses immersion learning like Rosetta Stone but it's more guided. It eases you into the language you chose to learn. Gamification is good; it awards you frequently with gems to be used in the app for various perks. I have noticed that I was able to read content in my chosen learned language much faster using Duolingo than compared to Rosetta Stone. It's also very accessible in the form of a mobile app, so if you install it on your phone, it can go with you anywhere which makes learning much more accessible.

Cons

I don't like how many ads Duolingo makes you watch between lessons. It is distracting to the learning environment. It's not a problem if you subscribe to Duolingo Plus but the free version's ads are very distracting and not conducive to learning. It pushes you toward subscribing even if you don't necessarily want to.

Excellent start for learning languages - Tries to turn it into a game

Reviewed on 2022/04/03

Pros

I dont think i've seen other learning tools and apps succeed in gamification in the same way as Duolingo. This gives a great advantage for casual learners and can help them develop basics of a language as opposed to a standard learning environment.
It also provides a relatively productive way to handle 'slack time' that you may have during a bus, train or underground trip on the way to work or somewhere else.

Cons

The software is great for casual learning. But should you become serious about learning a language to the point of intensive lessons you may find Duolingo lacking compared to a traditional course.

How to Master new language? Try Duolingo

Reviewed on 2021/03/29

After using it for a couple years so far, I can say that I am more than satisfied with Duo, especially after I started learning German daily with the use of it ( currently I am at my 358 day with 234 crowns and I want more knowledge, more skills and of course more Duo ). I would like to see more improvments in Duolinguo and if possible, that they return as officially recognized by LinkedIn as well, as I would like to boost more my German, share it with my connections and eventually land a new and better job thanks to it.

Pros

I love that feeling of accomplishment after new skill was acquired or new level gained ( and crown for it too ). It teaches me the basics of some language and it is free too, but I would like to see even more chapters in future, as you can't get enough of it.

Cons

I don't like the new system with five hearts ( for five negative answers, after which you fail a lesson ), but I understand it is there in order for this platform to keep being free for everyone and because of that I don't mind it too much. In the other hand, I would like to get more things which can be bought in the Duolingo shop, maybe some new outfits for Duo and especially more advanced skills for languages.

Homework, homework, homework

Reviewed on 2022/05/26

My overall experience is good, but not excellent (some of the sentences are kind of weird and not very useful). But it’s a good way to gain confidence on your grammar when it comes to write in a different language.

Pros

I think there are not such a thing of too many tools to help us learn (or improve) languages, so it’s good news that we have apps like Duolingo, one of the best known by the way. And that’s for something. I feel like I’m carrying my English teacher in my pocket, I can do the homework literally everywhere and at my own pace. I think it’s especially useful for beginners or for the lowest level skills.

Cons

This app is convenient and easy to use, but I’m not sure if it’s the best way to gain fluency in a language. I’ve been trying to be proficient in English for a while now, and I find it helpful to learn grammar, writing and reading, but not as much to improve my listening or speaking. Nothing like practicing dialogues and conversation with native speakers to do so, these language apps won’t do miracles.

Duolingo: an efficient language learning software

Reviewed on 2021/10/05

my experience with Duolingo has been all right. It gave me the opportunity to learn a new language without paying for language classes which is good.

Pros

I like Duolingo because it is a great language learning tool. I used to learn to improve my French language when I was studying at the university. I like how it is free and so easy to use.
I don't have to spend any money on language classes due to this app. I also love its gaming format. It makes learning French and Spanish fun for me without the pressure of learning in a class.
I also like its compatibility with mobile devices. I open it on my android phone and take my lessons for the day irrespective of my location.
Also, its daily reminders help me stay committed to learning and not forget my learning tasks.

Cons

While Duolingo is a great language learning app, I find the pop-up ads a nuisance. Another thing I dislike about it is that it lacks the most important element for learning a language, which is; face to face interaction. That is crucial for learning your target language.
Also, I would not recommend Duolingo if you want to advance to a native level in your target language. I have finished all my French lessons on the app. Although my French improved tremendously, I am still far from being on the level of a native French speaker.

Easy Language Learner

Reviewed on 2022/03/08

Was using the free version for a while and it's been great. Those ads have been realy obnoxious and feel my Spanish reading and vocab has improved a enough to order the 12 month plan. Definetely recommend full version.

Pros

I really like the app. It is great to learn the basics. To be clear just using Duolingo to learn a language is not enough. You need other methods as well and most importantly you need to practice with native speakers.
Btw, not only is their platform pleasing, fast, and fun, it works as promised!
the only downside is of course the ads (and hence the 4 stars -- program and content is 5 stars for sure), but hey, IT IS FREE! IGNORING THE ADS IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY!

Cons

Quantity of material varies among languages.
And I was really enjoying the program and the motivation it provided to keep my daily usage streak going., but reporting the bug is not easy, I did my best and after 3 days they have responded. That nippers little bit.

A must have for anyone interested in language learning or teaching

Reviewed on 2021/03/30

Duolingo is a great app for whoever wants to learn, start learning or just stay engaged with the languages they're interested in. I use it to learn Japanese and whenever I develop an interest for any language, Duolingo is the first app that comes to mind. I've used several other software to try to learn but I always come back to Duolingo.

Pros

I teach languages for a living and one of the biggest challenges was to gauge how much and exactly what the students know. With Duolingo my job became a lot easier with their Duolingo For Schools product. Duolingo already makes language learning fairly simple by avoiding to overcomplicate the learning process with dense grammar and leaning towards a more intuitive experience but when they introduced this new feature on top of that it only made my love for the app even deeper.

Cons

Duolingo is a very intuitive app but it falls short when it comes to certain features. For example: it's very difficult to set up Duolingo For Schools and in the mobile app there isn't even any button for it. The student has to go to the settings and look for it.
Also, Duolingo has features for some languages and not for others. I guess this is due to the time it takes to create content but until the day comes this will always feel like a downside.

Love Duo!

Reviewed on 2022/12/19

I love duo! It helps me to keep learning and is fun and easy to use! I find the stories are really nice for 'real-world' applications of using the vocabulary. Honestly, highly recommend!

Pros

Duo is so easy to use and fun! It keeps me accountable and helps me to remember words that I may otherwise forget if it wasn't for the good timing! I like that it's a quick daily lesson and that Duo sends reminders if I fall off from Daily use. User friendly, cute graphics, and most importantly useful for language learning!

Cons

There's very little that I would list as a con with Duolingo. I use the free version so not all features are unlocked, which works for me, but you do have the option to pay to unlock more features. They give you the option to flag answers that you believe may have an error, but it does that a while for those to be reviewed.

Duolingo Changed My Life!

Reviewed on 2021/12/15

In overall, I love Duolingo. I find myself watching French movies now and understanding something that I never did but of course I still refer to subtitles to confirm that I am on the right track. My reason for learning a new language is for exercising my brain and keeping it sharp.

Pros

For starters, Duolingo is free despite the fact that it teaches you a whole new language, a language that can change your life in terms of improving your cv, giving your brain a sharp memory etc. I like that Duolingo sends me emails or notifications everyday when he realizes I may have forgotten about the lessons because most times I would have. Duolingo has very interesting French lessons that are also part of the lessons. They are really interesting and make you want to continue reading and studying.

Cons

When I am recording my voice in response to what Duo wants me to say, I realize that the speech recognition is not that precise. At times I hear myself pronounce badly and be ready to say it again but Duo does not hear it properly and marks as pronounced properly. The speech recognition is lacking a bit and I believe can be improved.

Best Language Learning Experience

Reviewed on 2022/08/04

I have tried a few other language learning apps, but I always come back to Duolingo. It is yet to be seen if it can help me gain some level of fluency (which will likely require more language immersion than an app can provide), but it has been an excellent tool to get me started in that direction.

Pros

The interface is very easy to use and has improved considerably over the years. The gamification of learning has really helped me stay on track: It is fun to be able to quickly move through each task while still seeing noticeable progress. The whole experience is definitely finely tuned in order to keep you from getting discouraged while also being challenged.

Cons

Since the base version is free, there must be ads, but, besides the ads, I wish there were not so many prompts to click through after every lesson. The calculation of points and rewards should be only one or two screens: I want to get on to the next lesson.

Pros

The product is very easy to use.
And the integration is super smooth, I can manage all the functions and perform all the tasks that the product asks me to do.

Cons

The product in general is very good, however, there could be a musical dynamic perhaps, where the interaction with the user was done through songs. I didn't find any difficult to use aspects of the product.

My Duolingo experience

Reviewed on 2021/08/18

Experience has been good overall.

Pros

I just love how easy the app is to use, UI/UX is playful and straight forwards.

Duolingo literally has made learning a language fun.

I love the plethora of languages there are to learn, currently doing spanish and french.

App is quiet interactive, has a lot of assessments and fun ways to really help solidify what you have learnt.

My favorite part and motivator were the score boards and competing with other language learners around the world, I literally would come back day after day just to see who beat my score.

That aside, I love that it requires you to be interactive through typing and voice (click to respond).

I felt accomplished after finishing each assessment/test.

Cons

Sometimes the app doesn't recognize that you gave the correct voice answer.
