Great of the existing clients we have so long as the annual subscription doesn't continue to climb well in excess of inflation.

Pros

Cons

the product has become un attainable for most SME's with the start cost in excess of £1K

-We can backup a complete VM to restore in a specific point.
-We can send a lot of backups with a high volume of data and still work without problems.
-We can see the backups in real time and see with file is backing in real time.
-A lot of specifications to restore data (path, permissions, overwrite, etc...)

We used Backup Exec for several years to push backups to tape and to physical hard disks. Failures were frequent and frustrating.

Pros

Once configured the product ran well enough to create good backups and was not difficult to setup.

Cons

Backups had frequent failures and issues, support was not what it should have been for an enterprise level product.

Why I left Veritas

It served me well for 25 years. However, I don't know what the current version can do. They were not able to show me a demo. In the end I bought Veeam. There are a few features that I use. There is the normal backup and restore. Replication on to the cloud. The 2 capabilities that I found important was (1) an IMMUTABLE Backup. It is a local secondary backup that can't be over written. Good protection against ransomware. It requires a Linux OS. (2) If the server crashes, I can bring up a backup and have people continue working until a new server is created. The only issue is that this can't be backed up while being accessible to the end user. Unitrend offers (2),but not (1). They only have Cloud Backup.

Pros

I used it for years and it was always reliable. However, I can't recommend the product any more. Read the cons.

Cons

In July & Aug 2023, I tried for 2 months get a demo of the latest version. I only had one return phone call and the person didn't follow up. No reply to emails even though I had this persons email address. I was totally ignored. The sales agent said that they are understaffed because of COVID from the last 2 years. It wasn't possible to see a demo of the latest version. I gave up after 2 full months. I had older versions that stopped working once the server NetframeWork was upgraded. Veritas said one could only buy a newer version. They were not going to fix the older versions.

Veritas Backup Exec is most suited to Small / Medium Businesses.

Veritas Backup Exec is a good choice for small to medium businesses with a relatively simple set up , not requiring many different agents to be backup up, and without excesses amounts of data.
The licensing model is complicated and can be expensive, but I have seen great changes in the options supplied now - such as the Per VM model

Pros

Its great that Veritas Backup Exec has kept up to date with licensing, allowing per VM licensing via subscription.
Ease of installation and use for those businesses without a very technical and dedicated IT Team.
Compatible with most, if not all, tape libraries.
Integrates well with Vmware

Cons

The licensing model is more complicated than others, ie Veeam - each agent needs to be licensed - makes for a complex licensing model.
Backups are relatively slow.
The dashboard is not as intuitive as its competitors interfaces.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis Cyber Backup

Reasons for Switching to Veritas Backup Exec

Veritas remained in these environments as it was doing its job. The customers own the licensing, and are simply paying renewal each year, so it makes no sense to move to another product, when the current system is working and paid for.
