I was a very fan of "SurveyMonkey", thus I was looking for something similar, that could give to my organization the same experience BUT with self-host and free possibility. And Limesurvey delivered It to us. Since then, we automatized a lot of processes in our organization. The results were astonishing. We are saving a lot of time.
Pros
It's free, open-source and I can host in my own server (for free). It's even easier to build forms and questionaries than with survey monkey and google forms. The admin interface is easy to use and also the user interface. Very quick to build new forms, to see the answers, etc. Admins can use LDAP to login.
Cons
Impossible to say anything bad about this software.

Pros
I like how it works and its environment. I recently requested technical support and I am very surprised of how quickly and precisely they answered. It was important for me to solve my problem fast and they were very efficient and kind!
Cons
I would like to have more built-in question types and flexibility with the scale-type, for example (1-10 scales and 0-10 scales)
Response from LimeSurvey
Hello and thank you for the nice review. You should be able to create any scale type using the normal array question type, where you can define any scale. If you have problems, please don't hesitate to contact our support at [email protected]

We piloted Limesurvey with one state agency probably about 6+ years ago, and quickly realized that this would be an excellent tool across the enterprise.
Pros
Intuitive user interface, most of our end-users can review the quickstart guide and be up and running with few questions to our survey administrators
Unlimited questions per survey - that tool is a limitation on another survey tool we use.
Excellent responsive templates with built-in bootstrap framework
Survey output is web accessible (WCAG/Section 508) minus a few things here and there. There has definitely been proactive work done in this area.
Easily customizable templates
Excellent survey and user permission control
Cons
The admin interface still needs a lot of work to make it accessible/WCAG compliant. This is an area they should continue to work on
When they release a completely new version, they need to make sure that online help/resources are ready for when that new version comes out.

Lead generation is what we are currently using it for, although im sure it can be used for a lot more in the future
Pros
I loved the fact that I was able to integrate this right into my vicidial platform and generate leads through it, absolutely amazing!!
Cons
The fact that if a survey was not completed, the next call we ran through the survey with picked up where the incomplete one didn't finish at and we had to press the previous button all the way back to the beginning and redo the surveys.

We use LimeSurvey both for in company surveys as well as for public surveys. We write our own reporting scripts (in PHP and/or R) for individual and aggregated reports.
Pros
Firstly we began using LimeSurvey because it has a free version.
Later we found out that it has an amazing development team, both paid people in Hamburg, as well as some fantastic volunteers that spend a lot of time helping others.
Because LimeSurvey is Open Source and written in PHP, it turns out to be extendable and adaptable to our needs. Now, in 2018, after 9 years of living with it, we have it as one of our basic tools for research.
Cons
Earlier version were sometimes hard to learn, this has become a lot better, but the administrative user interface does still need some love & attention.

Pros

Cons

LimeSurvey at first sight seems very intuitive and helpful yet creating a survey is very troublesome. For next time I will stick to other platforms like Google.
Pros
The variety of types of questions and the extent to which one can customize surveys.
Cons
The complexity of the website itself. You have limesurvey mainwebsite then another one for your survey. The survey website is very unclear and requires quite some knowledge beforehand to be able to make questions. The layout should be simplified to make it more coherent and unambiguous as to what you do.
Response from LimeSurvey
Hello Jordy,
thank you for your valuable feedback.
We actually have planned to tackle the usability issues in the upcoming release of LimeSurvey as we also feel that the onboarding is still way too hard for new users. Also, we know that the interface is not consistent in many places and fixing this will also be a focus of our effort in the immediate future.
Thank you for confirming this, and I hope you might give use another try after that.
Best regards

I have been using LimeSurvey for a couple of years in my organization for customer experience surveys and in training courses to grade attendees knowledge and to evaluate trainers.
Pros
LimeSurvey is an easy to use tool for making surveys and grading simple tests.
I love the fact that it has an integrated interactive tutorial for getting started.
It has all question types/templates that you will commonly use when creating a survey. Its UI is really intuitive and comes with preview images in all question types.
What I like the most about LimeSurvey is that you can configure lots of settings for a survey, like the restricted access control, timing, type of questions, survey logic creation, expiration date, url redirection after completion, etc.
Cons
What I do not like about LimeSurvey is its theme/template editor. It could be easier to modify by any non developer.

Experience with LimeSurvey
Reviewed on 2018/10/15

My team uses LimeSurvey for collecting data on a national and international levels, and it has suited most of our needs so far. My overall experience has been largely positive and the support team has been fairly responsive, providing me with advice on a number of occasions. However, you have to have a professional license for that.
Pros
Depending on the scale and complexity of your surveys, LimeSurvey can be either fairly straightforward and easy to learn or would require more time to get an in-depth understanding of all its features, which require advanced programming skills related to web development (CSS, JavaScript, JSON).
The platform is open-source and is regularly updated. Can be either used hosted by its developers or installed on your local server, which allows for more customization. It has several licenses to choose from if you prefer to use it hosted.
It is based on Bootstrap 3 and has a sophisticated theme editor, which needs to be used for adjusting themes according to your wishes.
It has a nice Stats feature that provides a quick analysis of collected data in real-time. Although, it is mostly helpful when you use default question types without extensive modifications with JavaScript.
It is available in various languages, which is useful for international surveys.
Cons
Even though the platform is well maintained, there are still minor bugs/issues that come up once in a while, when you start using it on a regular basis. And because it's an open-source product, it is not as extensively supported as a fully commercial product would be in this regard. Thus, it often takes some time for bugs to be fixed.
Also, it has its limitations when it comes to some complex question types, as it has its own set of default questions and other platforms might have a larger variety of questions to use, which might save time when creating a survey.

I used to work as an IT guy at a call center, and we noticed that a lot of clients were interested in our surveys but were reluctant to talk to our operators. We offered the option to have the survery sent to them by email and noticed that the answers were even more elaborate than over the phone, with some people even sending screenshots and documents as feedback, where applicable.
Overall, it improved the survey detail we were able to provide to customers, and even got us some contracts in the business fields we were previously discarde because of our call-only approach.
Also, training people to use it was easy because it is very comprehensive and easy to build up and add complex sections.
Pros
- Free
- Extremely easy to set up form, questions, and sections by choosing from the provided options
- Anyone with MS Office experience can make a professional looking survey
- Easy and advanced control of surveys completed, questions answered, skipped or not understood
- Response data visualization
- Hosting options
Cons
We had some minor issues with WYSIWYG HTML editor, but these were resolved.

I am working with Limesurvey since 2007. Its user interface has improved a lot recently and the software supports lots of features not even paid software can offer. The "Expression Manager" is a very powerful tool to create a scoring system and calculate scores as survey runtime based on the users feedback. This can be used for assessments or psychological tests which includes dynamically showing certain text blocks at the end of the survey.
Pros

ability to create custom designs
availability of professional support (Limesurvey Partners program)
number of available question types
powerful plugins
extensive manual
ability to run surveys offline using "OfflineSurveys" Android app

As I was testing out survey software, I enjoyed how favorable the free version is to someone trying to decide on a Survey solution, besides the minor limitations in the free version.
Pros
The free version lets you have a feel of the software which lets you decide if paying for the additional features is worth the cost. The no features restrictions and an unlimited number of surveys is awesome
Cons
The storage limit and advertising on end page as part of the free version. It would also be nice if the company could increase the number of administrators in the free version.

I did not have a good experience with this software, it may be a problem with the current version or in the coding of it. however, it is a good proposal to implement surveys via the web in your company locally.
Pros
Free and Open source is the most emphasized of this application, colorful and functional. In the business environment have a feedback with your employees, suggestions, concerns is of utmost importance to improve the work environment !.
Cons
I had many problems when implementing this software in my work !. It was a clean and simple installation in UNIX environment, without problems in databases or libraries. But when creating surveys the creation of groups and users is a bit complicated! Once the accounts were created and published, many problems occurred when both the send and the commit occurred. The application was blank for several minutes before throwing some kind of error !.

I've used Lime Survey extensively for course evaluations and research surveys
Reviewed on 2018/03/15
Pros
I was new to survey software so LimeSurvey was a good adventure and experience. I downloaded and printed the manual and worked my way through it. Great flexibility of options for questions and formats, easy to launch and manage and easy to generate useful reports or data in spreadsheet format. Many of my graduate students subsequently used LimeSurvey for their research and it was easy to direct them and have them manage their own surveys.
Cons
Some question formats were counter-intuitive and took time to conquer. Using tokens for surveys was challenging to learn. All was solved eventually.
