BIM 360 Overview

What is BIM 360?

BIM 360 is a construction management platform connecting AEC workflows from design, to preconstruction, to site execution, to commissioning & handover. By connecting the data, people, and processes, more predictable outcomes are achieved. More predictable outcomes help general contractors, construction managers, project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, architects, engineers and owners, improve profitability of their projects.

BIM 360 Docs is document management built specifically for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals to publish, manage, review and approve all project documents in the cloud. Project teams can stay up-to-date on 2D plans and 3D models, create design markups, and extract document sets from design files.

BIM 360 Design is built for team collaboration, allowing users to co-author shared Revit models, and manage deliverables throughout the construction project lifecycle.

BIM 360 Glue helps users perform constructability reviews and streamlines BIM project workflows. Users can review projects and resolve coordination issues by directly loading models into Navisworks for 4D animated timelines, model-based quantification, and more. Layout features enables vertical construction contracts to connect the coordinated model to the field layout process, improving accuracy of building components.

BIM 360 Build improves quality and promotes safety. By doing so, project efficiencies are gained, which reduces rework and risk. Digital checklists are used for inspections, ensuring safety and quality programs are beind adhered to. Users can create, assign and manage issues, RFIs and submittals, as well as track field performance with daily reports.

BIM 360 Ops is mobile-first maintenance management solution. Monitor building health, access asset information, and manage occupant tickets, all from your mobile device. Anytime, anywhere.

A specialized cloud for BIM projects

BIM 360 is a much needed centralized information platform where you can share all the information regarding a Civil Engineering and Architecture project with all the team, or teams, that are participating in such project. I find this tool entirely useful for my projects, because I can share all the information about a project with my team, involving different disciplines such as Structural Engineering, Architecture, Plumbing Engineering, Interior Designers, and, most importantly, the Client Team.
The main difference about BIM 360 and other cloud services is that it allow us to review Autodesk files. Personally, in the projects I've participated, I've used it for reviewing, markups, and comment files from AutoCAD, Revit, and 3DS max. This is very useful because you don't have to install an app for using this service, all you have to do is access to the BIM 360 page from any smartphone, tablet, or pc, and you can view the model from that page.

The new way to model

For a designer or a builder is like a never getting old toy.

All in one powerhouse

We have used BIM 360 to coordinate between HVAC and structural engineers. It worked quite ok though we had problems with combining Revit models. Issue tracking was very nice. Created Issue has a status 'open' and when answerd the status switches to "answered'. From there you can reopen it or pass it to additional review or close the issue. We used file sharing extensively but didnt use the designated space but rather generic files for Revit. That way it was easier to download files.

There was also confusion over name and pricing. One program, I believe BIM 360 TEAMS was phased out and we were given BIM 360. This had many more options to coordinate building process, which we didn't use. The pricing was also 10 times more so in the end we decided to stop using it.

Somewhat useful, but the program could use some better functions.

Being able to load and download different types of modeling content file types such as .dwg, .ifc, .nwd, and even .rvt. Merging models was extremely straight forward and useful as well.

Construction and Design Team Cloud Integration

BIM 360 allowed our team to have up to date structural, mechanical, electrical, and architectural Revit models all accessible from the cloud at any time. Uploading models can be done simply from your local Revit session. Non Revit users can see a preview of the model. Non-current models that have been uploaded remain on the cloud with the date they were uploaded, allowing for easy recovery in the event of model corruption. Overall, BIM 360 simplifies processes we were doing manually and simplifies project coordination.

Pros

2) Saving all the information regarding a Civil Engineering Project.
3) Access to the Autodesk files from any smartphone, tablet, or pc.
4) Interaction with the models without the need of an app, just by accessing from any browser.
5) Markups and comment sharing.

Cons

The only con that I can think about is that you cannot edit files in this software. But, since its purpose is just to share information, I don't think that is necessarily a con.

For a designer or a builder is like a never getting old toy.

Pros

When I had to tenderized before BIM, it was a whole journey, design on Cad, transfer and convert to sketchup, rhino and Revit, with BIM just attach your planes, and you're good to go and take to virtual reality, what you are imagine as it is.

Cons

It will keep improving, don't change the platform with each software update.

Pros

Issue Tracking with multiple statuses, File Sharing and viewing online.3d model viewing (revit model). Issues can be pointed out on 3d model.

Cons

Confusion over name (BIM 360 teams is totally different than BIM 360)
Too many functions built in and no lite options for our needs.

Being able to load and download different types of modeling content file types such as .dwg, .ifc, .nwd, and even .rvt. Merging models was extremely straight forward and useful as well.

Pros

How easily I am able to add, merge, and store models. Also, it is pretty easy to add members to a model along with understanding what the different membership levels allow.

Cons

The cutting planes can be really far from the navigation screen which makes it hard & confusing to use. It would useful to be able to alter the nearness & farness of the culling plane such as in Navisworks Manage. I understand that creating too large of an "area" to be viewed/understood by the program bogs down the model, which is trying to be avoided with GLUE in general. However, the near culling plane is sometimes just not cutting it (haha, I hope you enjoyed my pun). Also, people using GLUE specifically cannot create section planes or viewpoints in the iPad model, which makes the model hard for those using it out in the field that wish to save viewpoints or cut into a section of the building. Also in GLUE, it is nice to be able to lock measurements in the x, y, or z axis, but there is no shortcut to exit this mode and to go back to measuring in a 3-dimensional direction. The only way I have found it possible to get out of the dimension lock is by exiting the model & re-entering. GLUE is a great software honestly, but were pushing for the model to be a lot more user friendly & give trade engineers confidence to turn to the model to answer coordination questions easily. If the program becomes to hard to use or makes the model seem unreliable, then we have an issue. So far, a lot of people love the program, but going back and forth between Navisworks and GLUE, I notice some features in Navisworks Manage that the team would love to use.

Pros

BIM 360 simplifies the Revit model sharing process to the click of a button, allowing the internal design team, as well as consultants and client, to be sure they are looking at the most current building information at any given time.

Cons

It takes some buy in from the entire team to fully utilize the inherent features (similar to choosing to use Revit as a team) but once it's set in motion it provides some cool benefits.
