SkyCiv Structural 3D
About SkyCiv Structural 3D
SkyCiv Structural 3D is a structural analysis software used by civil, structural and mechanical engineers, including architects and academic staff. The software allows users to build structural models and analyze shear, bending, deflection, stress, and more. The platform is completely cloud-based, enabling users to access their work and files via web browser, at any time.
Users are able to create and solve complex 3D structures with analysis on virtually any structure. SkyCiv Structural 3D's analysis features include deflection, (with X, Y, Z sum translations and X, Y, Z rotations), bending moment diagrams (BMD), shear force diagrams (SFD), axial forces, torsion, stress analysis, and full buckling.
SkyCiv Structural 3D enables engineers to visualize their structures with a powerful 3D renderer, as well as view the way the structure will look and deflect using color contours. Users can inspect the structure’s geometry, and rotate around the 3D model from each angle for a complete structural analysis.
SkyCiv allows users to save and load various sections from a library of American, European, Australian, and UK standard sections, as well as select a variety of beam sections, such as rectangular/square, hollow rectangular/square, hollow circular, circular, channel sections, I-section, L-section, T-section, and triangular. Users can also add a custom section, and preset materials can be selected from a drop down list for quick entry.
SkyCiv Structural 3D allows users to view and export their structural analysis text files in order to focus on specific results, with custom screenshots. The solution's unique "single member" function allows users to switch on specific critical members for a cleaner diagram view. Users can also download screenshots for reports and personal records. The platform allows users to store all files onto their SkyCiv account, which can be organized using the intelligent file manager.

Excellent software for innovation

Our business is on special designs for innovated processes that involved equipments and systems with structures that works in specific environments, so SkyCiv Structural 3D help us on the design with iteration process. We started of using SkyCiv Structural 3D when we developed a 6 m of diameter door for vacuum application with a huge hinge using just SkyCiv Structural 3D, it was the only option for designing on real time when we are welding and fabricating on shop, supporting the improvement process that changes the design every day.
Pros
The easy way of modelling, ideal for experienced and non experienced designers.
Cons
The mesh size when uses plates, I mean the most of the cases is just fine, but sometimes we design with our own plate design, so mesh and number of nodes are critical.

In 45 minutes I was able to show two different cross-sections under similar loading and support; the sketches were just like the sketches on my napkin. The final images were professional--and deflection results were clear to even the least confident technical person. I'm excited such a great system exists--and disappointed that it is only a larger package I really don't have time to learn--and really have no way to purchase. Big companies aren't great with monthly fees. Kindly note: this feedback represents my personal opinion and does not represent the opinion of Johnson & Johnson in any way.
Pros
Knowing the cross-section of my part, I quickly sketched this as a 2D section; knowing the supports and loads & material, I easily entered these and quicly had flexure/deformation/yield results that ballparked my design. I usually do this with a sketch, looking up things I don't know--but in the small part of this package that I used, I intuitively entered data, showed the effect of height changes, and shared out the path toward solution. FAST & EASY--I didn't need instructions.
Cons
I'm a mechanical engineer--most times I am not creating a structure--but often in automation I'm optimizing strength/weight/form/size; and even more often I'm trying to explain WHY to managers or less technical engineers. This software was ideal--but it does not seem available as just a simple beam tool. When I looked at purchase, I need to buy a subscription to a much larger package--when really I just need the most basic bits.

I have used both enercalcs and SkyCiv, which have similar capabilities. I prefer Enercalc because it is much more intuitive and easier to set up the simple calcs you want to do.
Pros
It was useful for analyzing a built-up steel section and had good visualization capabilities. Everything is saved in their cloud, which is a nice feature to have.
Cons
The types of structural analysis that are offered are limited. There may be more functions in the future, but for now it is useful only for a small number of projects.
