Google Sheets Overview

What is Google Sheets?

Google Sheets is a cloud-based spreadsheet platform designed to help businesses of all sizes collaborate with clients and partners to create and edit data on spreadsheets. The artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled system allows employees to add collaborators to projects, view real-time changes in the sheet, and chat with team members from within documents.

The application lets administrators set expiration dates on projects and grant permissions to download, copy, or print content among specific collaborators. Stakeholders can utilize the explore functionality to view trends and gain data insights through customizable visuals in real-time. Google Sheets offers data loss prevention (DLP) module, which enables organizations to detect potential data breaches and prevent data leak by blocking sensitive data visibility among unauthorized members.

Google Sheets provides an API and Zapier integration, which lets businesses connect with several third-party platforms such as BigQuery, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Apps Script, Trello, Slack, Mailchimp, and more. Other features include information rights management (IRM), customizable templates, analytics, collaboration, survey creation, revision history, conditional formatting, and more.

Helps Me Share Data Seamlessly!

I love it. I used to be a Microsoft Excel diehard fan, but Sheets has converted me. It can do pretty much everything that Excel does, and I can access it from any device.

Easy Tool for Analysis and Charts

Using Google Sheets has helped me manage my list of new and existing product skus for marketing optimization and analysis purposes. I have been able to dig deeper into why certain marketing campaigns or tactics perform better than the others for specific products, categories or customers. So, I can spend more money on tactics which improve my product conversions and ROI while reducing my spend on those tactics which are driving lower conversions and profits. I have been able to optimize my paid media spend and sku list with lower investments in software. So, my business has become more profitable.

I love it. I used to be a Microsoft Excel diehard fan, but Sheets has converted me. It can do pretty much everything that Excel does, and I can access it from any device.

Pros

I think my favorite thing about this software is the ease with which it allows me to share data with other users in my organization. While a lot of our company reports still export to Microsoft Excel, I can very easily convert the Excel document to Google Sheets. Then I can add people to the Google Sheet so that they have access to the data as well. It's so nice to be able to share and edit the sheet at the same time as other people. Greatly reduces the number of back and forth emails for sure! Formulas are easy to enter and manipulate as well.

Cons

My only gripe (and this may definitely be user-error) is that I routinely run into the issue where when I am entering data, Sheets tries to convert the data to a hyperlink. I could be entering addresses, notes, names - anything really! - and Sheets tries to make it into a hyperlink. That does frustrate me a bit because it makes my spreadsheet look messy, and then when I try to click on a cell to edit it, instead of selecting the cell, my cursor selects the hyperlink.

Pros

I use Google Sheets tool to collect all item skus I sell on my e-commerce website. So, I can concatenate them as one single string and apply as a filter in Google Analytics product performance report. I then run the report in Google Analytics by applying segment of specific email or social campaign and export it in Google Sheets format to pull a visual trend on sales over time. This strategy helps me quickly analyze the impact of external campaigns so I can determine any new items sales and new customers. Additionally, I can easily share my analysis with my business partner, so he is also in the loop on our business ROI. I give him edit rights, so he can add his own comments or products data from the categories he is managing. We both love the fact that if our computers freeze or shut down for a reason, our data gets saved in cloud.

Cons

Google Sheets tool has limited charting or data visualization capabilities when compared to Microsoft Excel. For example: when I try to create a stacked column chart using Google Sheets, it doesn't look that professional or easy to read. The copy tab feature can also be improved. Currently, I can copy a specific tab from one sheet to the next but it includes additional text 'copy of' or something along with the original tab name. So, I have the delete that additional text every time I make a copy. Microsoft Excel doesn't include that additional text. Finally, converting an Excel file with multiple tabs into a Google Sheet is not that simple. It is not easy to convert a specific tab and the whole file has to be converted.

Pros

My design works involves spreadsheets and spreadsheets, and Google Sheets is a fantastic alternative to using MS Excel. It's easy to use, cloud-based and fairly scalable to include multiple data loaded sheets. Sharing, commenting and reviewing features are worth checking out!

Cons

A tad slow to operate and open. Has limited function capabilities as compared to Excel. That's understandable because it's cloud-based. Also, at times I need offline editing capabilities and that requires an additional plugin for Chrome
