Vulnerability assessment solution for security practitioners

About Nessus

Nessus is a cloud-based security configuration and vulnerability assessment solution designed to help security practitioners identity and resolve vulnerabilities to protect organizations against various security risks. It comes with pre-defined templates which can be customized by users to scan for critical vulnerabilities.

Key features of Nessus include asset discovery, web scanning, policy management, prioritization, and vulnerability assessment. It allows businesses to tailor scans based on individual preferences, ensuring compliance with several Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks and other best practices. Security teams can generate reports on vulnerability types, export them in a range of file formats including CSV, HTML and XML, sort data by client or team, and share them via email after every scan for improving transparency across processes.

Nessus comes with a live results module, which enables users to perform offline vulnerability assessments in order to detect, validate, and prioritize issues for improving organizational security. Teams can also categorize similar vulnerabilities and present the issues in a single thread to streamline prioritization and ensure immediate remediation of issues.

It is my favorite tool which is used for vulnerability assessment which helps to find security breaches and threats. Its less complicated to administrate too . After doing lot of researches with different tools we have finally decided to go with Tenable Nessus . Also the automation part is pretty much helpful .Scan report helped me to find the security threats and implement that based on the report

Pros

Most i liked about this product is that its designed to be user friendly ,making it usable for both experienced and intermediate who are less familiar with vulnerabilities and next important is their frequent updates system which helps in making the security system more effective

Cons

1. Scanning time is bit high
2. Sometimes false positives
3.Cost factor

The client side agent is lightweight and easy to deploy once you get it successfully installed and reporting in. The adminstrative console is somewhat confusing, but provides very detailed reports that you can customize to your liking.

Pros

Does what it is supposed to. Provides a good overview of vulnerabilities across systems for internal security assessments and audits. Easy to deploy MSI package

Cons

Support is something to be desired. During initial setup in our environment, there were several complications when attempting to connect machines to the tenable.io cloud and provide the client machines with updates. The support group couldn't provide necessary assistance and we ultimately left to troubleshoot on our own.

Nessus Professional Gets The Job Done

This product does a great job of informing your IT and security groups on what may be vulnerable in your environment. Especially if your organization is looking to begin a program, start small and use this service to build up your processes and program before sinking large amounts of money into other services or products.

Pros

Nessus is still the industry leader in this arena, and the ability for the product to identify vulnerabilities accurately is still the high water mark to beat. You can be up and running in just a few minutes, and the ability to have recurring scans is a great way for this product to help you with your security program. The "Plugin Output" fields help greatly when trying to determine if tests are a false positive, and lends additional credence to your system administrators when you can show them exactly *why* something has been detected as a vulnerability.

Cons

There are no ways to track vulnerabilities or your efforts to monitor them over time; this truly is just a point-in-time view of your environment unless you upgrade to a much more expensive product.
