About Vault

Vault by HashiCorp is a data protection software designed to help businesses secure, store, and manage access to passwords, tokens, encryption keys, and certificates to protect confidential data across databases, workloads, systems, infrastructures, networks, and more. The platform enables organizations to perform authentication using various identity providers including LDAP, CloudFoundry, Active Directory, Kubernetes, and other cloud platforms.

Vault lets administrators connect and configure various storage applications and databases like Microsoft Azure, Consul, CouchDB, Google Cloud, and Swift in order to store information, keys, credentials, and policies. It offers a host of features such as customizable workflows, role-based permissions, identity plugins, disaster recovery, multi-factor authentication, and more. Managers can also use the key rolling functionality to update and issue new access keys throughout the distributed infrastructure and decrypt values and information related to past versions of keys.

Users can create identity groups and define policies to automatically authorize access across the organization and networks. Vault by HashiCorp supports integration with various third-party platforms including MySQL, Oracle, Amazon AWS, MongoDB, Microsoft SQL Server, and more.

Vault is a key part of a company's secret management. Without it we would have to pay for a managed service by a cloud provider.

Pros

Vault is a quick and easy way to securely store secrets for access by multiple users/teams. It provides a service which is highly configurable and open source.

Cons

As Vault is a key-value store masked as a file-traverser, it can sometimes be unclear in which directory a secret is stored.
