Pro Tools
About Pro Tools
Pro Tools is an audio editing software that helps musicians, students, teachers, and audio professionals record, edit, mix, and produce unique audio content. The solution enables artists to compile various takes of a recording, fix tracks' timing, and match audio beats in real-time.
The centralized platform offers an editing toolset that lets teams optimize soundtracks and trim audio clips to compose music. Operators can utilize Pro Tools to capture musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) performances, save presets, and automate playlist tracking. The system lets businesses access various sounds from guitars, loops, drums, and more to create song beats. It also allows administrators to process vocal sounds using nudge notes, change plugins instantly, and manipulate audio tracks.
Songwriters can distribute the music on various streaming outlets including Apple Music, Spotify, TikTok, Amazon Music, and more. Pro Tools also lets managers automate plugin settings, manage volumes, and alter sound effects to create balanced mixes.

The (old) industry standard for a reason

I’ve been using PT since it required proprietary hardware, and I’d say it’s improved a lot since then. Moving from the iLok system was also a good move, but the monthly fee is a hard pill to swallow if you’re not making a living doing audio stuff.
Pros
ProTools earned the reputation of being the best DAW for a reason in the 90s and 2000s, and it’s still one of the best. A good layout, great features and shortcuts, and it lets you do all you need once you put in the time to learn it. If you’re in or working with the music industry, it’s still the standard in many pro studios, but that only matters if you’re moving files back and forth a lot.
Cons
The rise of faster computers and home studios has given rise to other great DAWs that are functionally quite good and comparably feature wise. The biggest downside to protools currently is the price, especially now that they’ve moved to the subscription model, but if you know the layout and shortcuts, it’s hard to make the case to go with something else.

Great Software, Terrible Business Practices

I used it for over 15 years and loved it. I sang its praise and recommended it to anyone in my field. However, once Avid went to a subscription model, then plugins I'd used for years stopped working, that was the nail in the coffin for me. I switched to one of their competitors and will never go back.
Pros
Pro Tools, as a mixer, recorder, production application is top notch. It set the bar for every other DAW and none have really matched its high standards. There's a reason so many professional studios use it.
Cons
Where Pro Tools falls flat on its face is in Avid's business practices, as well as in Pro Tools ridiculous system requirements. I purchased Pro Tools, in different iterations, from 2001-2017. After that, Avid no longer offered a perpetual license, and went to a subscription format. I refuse to "rent" software. My latest version of Pro Tools also became very sluggish on my computer. This was a higher end Mac that was perfectly capable of running multiple layers of 4K video in Final Cut. But you're telling me it can no longer run Pro Tools? No thanks.

I think automation and plug-in capabilities could be improved but I am impressed at the real time pitch correction capabilities.
Pros
I have been using Pro Tools for several years now, and I have to say that I am very impressed with the real-time pitch correction features of the software. Elastic Time and Elastic Pitch make it incredibly easy to fix timing and pitch errors in my audio recordings, and I have found that I am able to achieve much better results in a shorter amount of time compared to using other DAWs. I particularly like the way Pro Tools analyses the audio and identifies transients, which allows me to make precise adjustments to the timing of my tracks without affecting the pitch. This has been a huge time-saver for me.
Cons
While I have found Pro Tools to be very powerful and user-friendly digital audio workstation, one of the biggest drawbacks, in my opinion, is the automation and plug-in capabilities. While Pro Tools does offer a wide range of automation options, I have found that the interface can be a bit clunky and difficult to navigate, especially in instances when working with multiple tracks. This can make it time consuming to set up and edit automation. I have often used other DAWs for serious automation processes.

An Essential Program for Mixing and Recording

It allows my business access to a common, ubiquitous, and satisfying language of mixing and recording. Wherever I compose, produce, or write a song, I can be confident that it can be finalized and mixed with stability and predictability in Pro Tools, where a vast user base of studios and mixers also have the ability to contribute.
Pros
Its prevalence in studios, its approach to mixing, and its careful, thoughtful, and considered approach to updates. The new features that are added may be added slowly and sparsely, but the program’s lack of prevalent bugs is unparalleled.
Cons
My only dislike is tied to its strength in mixing and tracking. It is not a DAW that lends itself effortlessly to the initial production of a song, but once it is time to record the vocal and mix the song, it is fantastic. They obviously prioritize this as it is what it’s user base wants. The catch is that you may find yourself making a beat in one program and then mixing it (or in my case, sending it to a mixer) with Pro Tools.
Reasons for Switching to Pro Tools
To be clear, I chose Pro Tools in addition to these products, rather than using a product like Studio One or FL Studio exclusively.Pro Tools FAQs
