About Surpass

Surpass is a library automation software designed to help public, corporate, church, museum, and school libraries handle cataloging and circulation of books. The integrated patron management module enables administrators to import patron lists, create photo ID cards, and automatically send email reminders and payment overdue messages to users.

It offers an online public access catalog (OPAC), which allows members to search reading resources in real-time. The application lets users manage catalogs as per machine-readable cataloging (MARC) standards and scan international standard book number (ISBN) barcodes. Surpass also provides a self-service portal, which helps users check-in/out, renew library resources, and manage their accounts.

Surpass lets businesses personalize the OPAC interface using custom widgets, add book reviews, summaries, annotations, excerpts, table of contents, and author notes, and enhance search options. Other features include content management, an activity dashboard, automated notifications, inventory management, reporting, data import/export, custom fields, and more.

Pros

I serve a community which is scattered across the country. Cloud-based Surpass has been handy in providing services to these stakeholders. The patrons have access to the Library's OPAC and digital resources from anywhere, twenty-four-seven.

Cataloguing with Surpass is as simple as abc. To add a new book to stock, we simply punch in the book's ISBN. Bibliographic information is automatically imported from relevant external database servers.

Not only is the searching interface beautiful but also interesting and effective. The search results display an impression of the book along side the essential details describing intellectual content of the books. Also, latest books appear on top of the search results.

We have relied on the power of Surpass to identify all the patrons. A record of each patron reveals the patron's photo, resources borrowed, holds and fines. All these information on one window makes the whole work of circulation much easier

Cons

Although patrons can renew physical books in the comfort of their homes, they still visit the library physically to return or borrow a physical resource. This defeats the concept of self service.

Service for customers of Surpass Library System

Pros

Since I have only one day using the Cloud system, I can't say yet how the system will work for me.

Cons

I am still learning, about things that are different, but I don't know if that will be a plus or minus.
I cannot get my "receipt printer" to work. I did download the program you suggested. I had to go to Textile Center "Tech Guru" help line to get their "admin" password, to move forward. They tried to get the "receipt printer"to run, but could not. So, I am hoping Surpass can make my "receipt printer" running.

Pros

The program works well but everything costs.

Cons

It takes a ridiculous amount of time to enter new books. The program will do it for you for an extra cost. We paid the extra cost and after 6 months, it still doesn't work. Very disappointing and looking to change programs.

Response from Surpass Software

Quickly entering new materials by downloading from the web can be done for FREE with our Quick Cataloging feature. What the school paid for was to renew expired support, not for this free feature. The feature did not work because the school firewall blocked it. This has since been resolved.

Also note that this review was NOT written by a Surpass user, but by the principal. So ratings on things like "feature richness" are not fair or appropriate. He also gave 1 star for "Ease of Implementation" yet he was not even at the school when the system was implemented in 2002.

Lastly, he rated Support at 1 star, yet never had any contact with our support. Instead, the librarian contacted support and was given details on how their technicians should resolve the issue with their firewall, which they eventually did. In a phone call, she said she was pleased with our very responsive and very helpful support.

Ratings seem unfairly harsh given "program works well" comment under "Pros."

Freeing up staff time for professional work, rather than being stuck doing repetive, clerical work. The speed with which the annual stock take happens now that we have a mobile barcode reader, and the resultant report from Surpass are just two of an endless list of benefits.

Pros

The logical grouping of features, the awesome customisation allowed in writing your own reports. The adherence to international standards (MARC, etc) made it super ease to integrate with my country's Bibliographic authority. The reassurance that when you power it up, it does not only appear on your screen, but it is working!!

Cons

The manipulation of fonts in reports is somewhat limiting when designing complex, comprehensive reports.

Being a former public librarian gave me a good reference point for choosing a software package for our church library. After several months of research, I chose the Surpass CL because of all of its features. The member functions - check-out, search, and reserve - are easy for the members to use, which was necessary as this is currently mostly a self-serve library. There is always a learning curve when learning a new database, but the database for maintaining the collection was not difficult to learn. It can be customized in many ways & do what you want. It is geared for growth. The IT help is amazing and patient. When learning any software, there may be questions or the occasional glitch. The sales personnel are not pushy. I have had it for two years now & would recommend Surpass to any library.
