Sierra

About Sierra
Sierra is a library automation system that helps private and public libraries manage electronic resource materials, circulation, cataloging, and more via a unified platform. The application enables employees to customize workflows, manage library acquisitions, track print serials, and configure recurring tasks.
It allows members to access library resources, electronic journals, and open access (OA) content, place a hold for checked-out books, view the library’s social media pages, and check out digital resources. It lets administrators manage bibliographic records, view statistics, load metadata, track orders, and capture, monitor, and store log files in a centralized repository. It provides a host of other features such as bindery management, Self-Check-in/out, barcoding, inventory tracking, reporting, communication management, and more.
Sierra offers restful APIs, which allow users to integrate the system with various third-party finance and learning management systems. It also helps employees collect fees, categorize books based on different topics, and provide vouchers to members.

Sierra has been a reliable catalog and circulation software. Very simple design makes it easy to search and do special functions as well as maintaining patron accounts. There aren't a lot of frills with the design and we did experience some occasional freezing/requiring to restart the software on individual computers but overall it gets the job done very well.
Pros
Very simple and no frills library catalog software from a staff user standpoint. Straightforward process to search for items, place holds, managing patron accounts, and other circulation functions. It doesn't look flashy and there isn't any fancy design but it definitely gets the job done.
Cons
Our library did have many instances of freezing or taking a long time for the software to load upon first opening it.

Very smooth operation and easy to learn. Works very well for check in / check out with patrons, and to search items.
Pros
Very simple to use and intuitive. Does not "crash" very often at all. Easy to learn, and works well for patrons who use self-checkout machines.
Cons
Could use better messaging to patrons on self check when there are problems with their account, such as an expired library card. Machine tells them to "go to the desk" but not why.

Quality ILS with great support
Reviewed on 2019/07/23
Pros
iii has a great track record for putting out great library software, and Sierra is no exception. This tool has a great customer focus in its discovery tool and more robust features for librarians. I appreciate how easy it is to use out of the box (well, as out of the box as any migration can afford). Great support, great product.
Cons
It's a premium library product, and you've got to pay for that. However, it's not outside the range of other ILSs (which are, in general, overpriced).
