Application performance management platform

About AWS X-Ray

AWS X-Ray is a distributed tracing platform designed to help businesses debug and analyze production and distributed applications, track performance, and identify root causes for service issues or errors. Professionals can view requests, access a map of an application's underlying components, and visualize node or edge latency distribution for services according to requirements.

The system traces user requests, pinpoints performance issues, and utilizes annotations to append metadata and filter or tag trace data to diagnose and discover patterns. AWS X-Ray supports applications written in various programming languages including .NET, Node.js, and Java.

Using AWS X-Ray, businesses can also filter and view data for traces based on properties such as average latencies, HTTP response status, annotation value, timestamp, used database tables, and more.

Essential starting place for most RCA

Reviewed on 2022/12/18

Pros

It gives excellent coverage across most AWS resources and even shows how resources interact with one another. This should not be relied on as the sole method of debugging, but gives enough information to go to logs or other individual resources. It also gives really good profiling for how the overall software is performing.

Cons

It has a 6 hour window... so if you miss it - you miss it. This is especially problematic because AWS reps can pull up info outside of that window but would look for AWS specific ids - which almost not possible (or quite difficult) without x-ray tracing to give easier querying.
