Secure password collaboration for tech teams

About Passbolt

Passbolt is an open source password manager tailored for secure collaboration. It is built for technical teams first and delivers mission critical credential and secret management that scales with your organization.

Passbolt is different from other password managers because:

- It is built for teams and collaboration: Passbolt enables teams of all sizes to instantly and securely share passwords with granular access rights, inherited permissions and powerful auditing capabilities, so they can confidently scale operations.

- It provides enterprise-grade security: Passbolt ensures password sharing security thanks to its unique public-private key and end-to-end encryption architecture. Passbolt is SOC2 Type 2, and is regularly audited by third parties.

- It is 100% open source and can be self-hosted: It can be hosted easily on-prem, behind your firewall for full data ownership.

Key features include:

- Interoperable OpenPGP-based Encryption: Ensures robust security standards are met. Power users can use their own private key for full encryption control.

- Granular Permission Settings: Allows precise control over who accesses specific secrets.

- Audit Trails: Provides comprehensive logs for all password-related activities, supporting compliance and forensic analysis. It also supports SIEM integration.

- LDAP directory synchronization and SSO: users and groups can be provisioned from most directories (Active Directory, OpenLdap). Users can authenticate without passwords using SSO.

- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Enables fine-grained permissions management, essential for complex organizational structures.

- Extensible Architecture: Thanks to its open-source nature, Passbolt can be customized and extended to fit specific needs, supporting a wide range of plugins and integrations.

I am very happy with Passbolt for its ease of configuration and use.

In addition, the team is very friendly and in the community forum they listen to suggestions to add to the platform and help you if you have any problems.

It is not an airtight system of which you know nothing about the equipment or how it is made, since it is open source and you can contact the team or the community for any problem

Pros

I like your workflow, making sure that the passwords are secure by keeping them encrypted until the end and only decrypting them on the client.

Also its integrations and features that make it easy to use and are quick to configure using its guides.

It's definitely worth using it even if you don't pay for the subscription and use the free version

Cons

If I had to look for a catch, perhaps it would be not being able to share passwords with other users of other servers or that you need to have an internet connection to access.

But to be honest, these are problems that all password managers have and without internet you probably don't even need to access the sites so I wouldn't know how to look for something bad since I love it

Overall, great - does what it needs to. More features than some competitors, and the self hosted nature makes it very good for my on-premise environments - definitely feel as if it's more secure than cloud/online based alternatives.

Pros

Open source - incredibly important to me, I want full control over the security, as well as knowing how it's setup. As long as your setup provides depth security you will be fine - very easy to setup but would prefer more intuitive deployments.

Cons

Sometimes, especially with passwords, you want peace of mind - although with self hosted applications you want lots of backups - I wish this was easier, and had the ability to automate it to a number of locations knowing it will restore 100% of the time.

Reasons for Switching to Passbolt

I use both personally - different use cases. Passbolt for online, passbolt for offline.

The Ultimate Password Manager of All Times: Passbolt

Reviewed on 2024/11/06

Pros

Availability of self-hosted and fully-hosted makes it flexible when managing passwords in one place.
It offers 2FA and and asymmetric end-to-end encryption to secure passwords for company accounts.

Cons

It’s been over 8 months but the only flaw on Passbolt is pricing which is a bit high compared to alternatives such as Zoho Vault.
