Many features, flexible, but steep learning curve

Reviewed on 2021/11/23

Pros

It's open source, has a lot of features out-of-the-box, and many plugins. It powers Wikipedia so it is secure and scalable.

Cons

It is hard to use for most people, and the wiki structure needs to be learned for many.

Despite the maintenance work it was even more refreshing to keep the tool in-house and on-premise. It made employees realize the importance of the tool, generating greater involvement of the team as a whole. The tool allowed us to better understand our day-to-day and generate more efficient and dynamic processes.

Pros

It is built on a very simple and popular stack known as LAMPhp and practically anyone in the IT area with internet knowledge will find it easy to install and manage the application.

Cons

Despite being simple and straightforward in the end, it was not without maintenance processes such as updating and backup, which ended up taking a certain amount of time from the IT team.

Reasons for Choosing MediaWiki

Mediawiki had version management in its heart, the others always needed either more elaborate training to explain the procedure or some plugin to be complemented and wikimedia was the only one that despite also allowing expansions had everything we needed. It was just natural

My overall experience has been great. Especially with smaller teams who need to manage documentation with smaller or no budgets. Having this available is huge for them.

Pros

The ability to just spin up a wiki for free that is opened source is extremely beneficial for these trying times.

Cons

The management and it being an open sourced product will introduce un expected changes or overhead. Even though it is expected it still exists.
