Top 5 alternatives to BigCommerce

Key benefits of BigCommerce

1. Faster results, superior ROI: since we are a cloud based solution, you no longer have the burden of owning infrastructure. Go to market time is on average 1/2 that of an on-premise platform like Magento, and total cost of ownership is 1/4 the cost. Money previously spent on hardware, hosting and maintenance can be reinvested in the business and tech teams can focus on higher-impact projects than fixing broken code and deploying patches and updates.

2. Flexible customizable SaaS: our open architecture enables you to seamlessly connect with critical business software - we offer one-click integrations, as well as powerful APIs & webhooks to build integration from scratch. Unlike competing platforms, we don't limit API calls. Additionally, our strategy differs here from Shopify; we believe in building an open platform, so you have the power of choice to integrate your own payment provider and Point of Sale, instead of pointing you to our home-grown solution.

3. Extraordinary shopping experience: the Bigcommerce theme framework is brand new and contains the bleeding-edge of site design capabilities. We offer beautiful easy-to-customize themes with drag and drop content blocks (Instagram feed, featured single product, blog featurette, etc) and highly-optimized one-page checkout. For customers customizing their sites, developers don't have to learn proprietary languages like Shopify's Liquid-- they can code in popular Handlebar languages. Developers will be delighted to know we offer local staging environments (preview changes across desktop and mobile displays using real-time catalog without pushing updates to your live store). Merchandisers will love that they can also personalize the storefront based on shopper behavior and purchase history.

4. Hub for all your sales channels: Bigcommerce unifies all aspects of commerce with Bigcommerce Channel Manager, an area where you can discover and connect to new sales channels. We sync product information, orders and inventory across channels so you no longer have to work in multiple interfaces to sell on multiple channels. Bigcommerce is one of the only ecommerce platforms partnered with social networks Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter to offer access to "social buy buttons," and we are closely partnering with Amazon to build a market-differentiated native integration.

5. A complete all-in-one solution: from conversion tools, to shipping functionality, to flexible promotions & discount rules, Bigcommerce offers all the capabilities you need to run a successful business built right it, without the need to pay for dozens of apps for basic functionality.

Among the best ecommerce solutions for growing businesses

We initially transitioned from Lightspeed eCom over to Bigcommerce because their platform offered greater scalability and entry-level features than what Lightspeed offered. Because we use Lightspeed POS, however, integrating product data between the systems was a challenge and a lengthy process. It also takes some effort to maintain the connection (via a third-party service using their API).

Pros

Bigcommerce offers some of the most inclusive features in their entry-level product options, making them excellent for small businesses. Their level of customer support and transparency about service issues and new features in development are excellent and perhaps one of the main reasons why we've kept using Bigcommerce instead of switching to a platform that meets other essential features that we are still awaiting from Bigcommerce. The availability of third-party apps (including shipping and logistics integrations) has been great to work with so far.

Cons

Storefront development is currently very lackluster and it can be difficult to get a truly customized website without hiring a developer or investing in web development skills of your own. This is also true of their e-mail features. If you don't have more than a basic understanding of HTML, it will be next to impossible to customize their system e-mails without a third-party solution. Also, while their entry-level features are among the most plentiful in the industry, a few features (such as Google Reviews integrations and Abandoned Cart Recovery) are reserved only for higher-tier plans, which doesn't make sense from a financial standpoint as their costs to support these features should be minimal.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Commerce, WooCommerce and Shopify

Reasons for Choosing BigCommerce

Note: We switched from Lightspeed's integrated e-commerce offering but still utilize their cloud POS and inventory management software (connected to Bigcommerce via API). We switched because Bigcommerce offered greater scalability than Lightspeed's own solution, especially concerning the ease of managing our inventory across multiple marketplace channels.

Reasons for Switching to BigCommerce

Bigcommerce ultimately offered the greatest financial value in terms of entry-level features and marketplace functionality that were available to us as a growing small business.

Overall, it's been pretty smooth sailing. Customer service is ALWAYS there and trying to help the best they can. They never leave me in the dark. Way easier and faster site than dealing with Magento.

Pros

I have used Bigcommerce for over 8 years. Overall, I think it works better and at a more reasonable cost than other related platforms.

Cons

I have 1k parent skus with 11k child skus. It will not import my large spreadsheet. So if there is a major price change from my brands, it's impossible to import my vendor's .csv or excel sheet. We have to update each regular price and sale price one by one. Takes way too much time to permanantly discount items / sales too.

Reasons for Choosing BigCommerce

Magento was a never ending money pit and operated very slowly.

Reasons for Switching to BigCommerce

Shopify charges fees for every sale. Overall with all the apps you need to buy with Shopify, Bigcommerce had more features out of the box. I still had to buy 4-5 apps. But I would have had to invest much more money with Shopify. Which wouldn't be enough money left for me to operate the rest of my business.

Overall, I like BigCommerce's eCommerce software, however I don't think it's for anyone that had a psychical store trying to start out online. If you are selling online only, it could be a good option.

Pros

Overall, for just only eCommerce, BigCommerce is great, and I have been using it for 10 years now. It is easy to use and customize, and has lots of great features (however you do have to pay for higher end features). No percentage fee is nice for smaller stores, but once you get to a certain scale, others offer no percentage as well with way more features.

Cons

The worst part about BigCommerce is their ability to integrate with outside software. Many small eCommerce stores are based out of a physical retail store, and there is NO easy, cheap, or even good way to integrate your in-store inventory with your BigCommerce inventory. For instance, if you use the popular Square POS in your retail shop, you have to pay an expensive 3rd party software for a janky, somewhat working system to that keeps your online inventory in sync with Square, so when you sell something in the store, it removes that stock online. BigCommerce refuses to take this issue seriously, which is unfortunate because I can't recommend it to anyone that has a physical retail store and wants to keep live inventory online.

Happy over-all.

Over all I am happy with BigCommerce.

Over all I am happy with BigCommerce.

Pros

I like the store I created. I like the creative freedoms in BigCommerce. I find my way around easily. I like that I could use Quickbooks to process payments. At the time I started my online store that was not possible with Shopify.

Cons

You should be able to add locations to invoices. I don't print packing slips, just the invoices. I have to hand write the locations on the invoice for the person pulling items for the order. I wish I could sort the order of the items and have it stay that way! It takes a bit of time for the average Joe to learn their way around on BigCommerce. Once I got past the learning curve it became quite comfortable.

Reasons for Choosing BigCommerce

Having built out multiple bigcommerce sites I would have to say the experience has been a good one. We have not had any major issues with the platform and our clients are very pleased with the final results of their websites.

Pros

Very easy set up. Once you or your client chooses a theme it is a pretty straight forward process getting your store online.

Cons

I would say the thing I liked least is not having some sort of builder for basic web pages. Too much customization needs to go into creating custom category pages.

Alternatives Considered

WooCommerce and Shopify

Reasons for Switching to BigCommerce

One of the main reasons we choose bigcommerce is they don't have many limitations on they types of products you can sell on their platform.
